CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Pottery:  Hand-Building All Levels

The goal of this class is to teach children the fundamentals of Hand-Built pottery by exploring clay’s character through a variety of applications.  The three main techniques of hand-building construction are Pinch, Coil, and Slab.  Projects will incorporate single techniques and combinations of the different techniques together to provide a nearly limitless number of projects.  Projects can be repeated in this rotation with students of various skill levels and returning students, examples of multiple projects are included for all techniques.

No prerequisite.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Pottery:  Intermediate Hand-Building

This class builds on the fundamental hand-building class for children who have previously completed multiple classes.

Prerequisite:  instructor's permission required.

This course is a basic wheel-throwing course focused on the basic skills and techniques of throwing forms on a pottery wheel and development of awareness of form.  The class covers fundamental techniques of throwing bowls, cylindrical shapes and plates.  Demonstrations will lead students through throwing these basic forms and basic glazing techniques.

Prerequisites:  Completion of at least one hand-building class and instructor's permission.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Children discover weaving on an assortment of table and floor looms.  From simple Rigid Heddle to more complex 4-harness looms, students are led through the entire process from dressing the loom, weaving samplers of various patterns through finishing and more advanced projects, designs, and harness techniques on looms with up to 8 harnesses.

Requires instructor's permission.

This class teaches fundamental drawing skills that will help improve and hone any young artist's skills, taking the mysteries out of the process.  Students learn the basics and time tested tricks of drawing in an adaptive environment.  Composition, proportion, depth of space and exploration of line, shadow, light and contour exercises.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Pottery:  Intermediate Wheel Throwing

This course is designed to expand technical skills and gain a better understanding of the aesthetics of form.  Students will broaden ideas and their artistic vision through exploration and experimentation of a variety of wheel, construction and glazing techniques.  This class features more personalized instruction and demonstrations based on student objectives and requests.  Discussions will be focused on craftsmanship, process, content and goals for their work.

Prerequisites:  completion of at least two wheel classes

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Pottery:  Advanced Topics

This class will be an opportunity for advanced pottery students to get critical feedback on their pottery.  A willingness to accept suggestions and embrace new techniques, philosophies and approaches is suggested.  This class will work through six weeks of "learning" through trial, error and eventual discovery instead of a goal of using a certain volume of kiln units.  Class time will be spent on demonstrations, group discussions and individual feedback.  Students are expected to continue their class work outside of the normal class time during any of the available open studio hours throughout the session.  The goal of the class is to notice an individual evolution and improvement in each student that is evident in the basic pottery forms they produce during the session.

No prerequisites.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Pottery:  Adult Hand Building

This course is for students interested in hand-building techniques and more experienced wheel-throwing students interested in incorporating hand-building techniques into thrown forms.  The class covers coil, slab and pinch construction methods and surface decoration techniques.

No prerequisites.

Extra Studio Policy

Studio times for practice are available to adult pottery students at no extra charge.  Class registration is required to use the studio during practice times, even if you do not plan to attend.  Studio will be open during class terms on the following schedule:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday:  10am - 1pm
  • Saturday:  1pm - 4pm
  • Sunday:  10am - 4pm
In addition, students may come during other evening class times to practice. At such times, students are expected to respect the fact that teachers and students are working together and should practice out of the way and quietly. Evening class times available are:
  • Monday:  7:00 - 9:30 pm
  • Tuesday:  7:00 - 9:30 pm
  • Wednesday:  7:00 - 9:30 pm

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Adult Weaving

Learn the art of weaving on a variety of table and floor looms; from the simple Rigid Heddle, Inkle to more complex 4-harness looms.  The course covers beginning through advanced levels of weaving.  Beginners will gain hands-on knowledge of the entire process from warping a loom through weaving samplers of various patterns through finishing.  Intermediate and Advanced students will focus on techniques of weave and pattern variations as well as various harness techniques on looms with up to 8 harnesses and materials selection and project planning will be covered with an emphasis on the use of color and creating textural effects.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
3-Dimensional Off-Loom Weaving

This course is an opportunity for individuals to design and create dimensional functional or decorative art pieces, utilizing a variety of fiber materials and fundamental techniques, such as knotless netting, cord wrapping, crochet and some macrame.

Basic materials will be provided, but students might want to gather more on their own, once their individual ideas develop.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Jewelry:  Lost Wax Casting

This course covers lost wax casting methods and techniques for all levels from the basics of wax working, mold making, composition, perspective, and design to more sophisticated concepts of texturing, enameling, stone setting and finishing.

Jewelry:  Wire & Enameling

This fun class is the perfect introduction for new jewelry students, with versatile materials and techniques that make it a great resource for more skilled students looking to expand their repertoire.  Students learn how to design and create jewelry from wire and sheet while exploring various techniques and materials including soldering, forming, and enameling.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Digital Photography

Students discover the basics of the digital camera.  Learn about camera settings, memory cards and printing options.  Students will shoot on their own each week and bring images to class for discussion.

Sculpture

This is an all levels class from the complete beginner to the more familiar. The class concentrates on forms, human and animal, from life or even fantasy. We address the basics of form, proportion, handling the materials all the way through the approach and techniques of building and surface options.
