Fibers Residency Opportunities

Interested in the perks of a fibers residency, but want to work with children? Check out our youth-focused residency opportunities, where your service hours primarily come from working with kids!
Live-In Resident, 1-year term
Term Start: August
Applications due May 1.
Residents will have their own studio space, access to studio equipment, materials stipend, and one free class every six week session at Access Arts.
In addition to developing a body of work, residents may participate in our sales and exhibition schedule. Year-long residents are given a solo show in our beautiful gallery at the completion of their term. Artists are encouraged to explore any and all facets of what we have to offer, including collaborative projects and grant-seeking.
The Fiber Resident will be responsible for teaching a minimum of one six week class per session, two one-two day workshops, or one six week class and one 1-2 day workshops per session.
Our artist residency is the perfect professional development opportunity for creative individuals across the spectrum of experience. While this is a teaching-intensive program, artists benefit from time to research, focus and explore while living among a community of makers in this supportive and immersive environment. The Fiber Residency program aims for a mentorship with the Fibers studio manager; they will gain hands-on experience in critique, CV, artist statement, portfolio development, and studio coordination.
In the Fibers department, we have a large variety of looms, including floor looms (4-shaft, 6-shaft, and 8-shaft), table looms, inkle looms, and rigid heddle looms. We also have sewing machines, spinning wheels, dye sinks, needle felting and wet felting equipment. Sample garden space is also available for the resident interested in cultivating dye plants for personal use or for class projects.
The local fibers community offers many diverse opportunities. Access Arts has a long-standing relationship with the Columbia Weavers & Spinners Guild, a varied group of more than 100 fiber artists. Many of these artists enjoy collaborating with Access Arts Resident Artists, and are eager to work out community projects and teaching workshops. One of the benefits to Access Arts' program is this collaboration and how it enables students to experience a diverse range of techniques and access the extensive guild library. This network also is a benefit to Resident Artists in that it allows a greater range of options for developing their work.
